Abstract
919,966. Control systems for welding arcs. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. May 12, 1959 [May 13, 1958], No. 15291/58. Class 38 (4). To avoid high voltages between working electrode 6 and workpiece 7 during non-welding periods, a relatively low voltage is supplied by an auxiliary transformer 2 having its primary winding 2a connected across the secondary winding 1b of the welding transformer 1 and its secondary winding 2b connected in a circuit which includes in series normally closed auxiliary contacts 4b of a welding contactor 4, the A.C. terminals of a bridge rectifier 11, the electrode 6 and workpiece 7. The operating coil of a delayed relay 9 is connected across the D.C. terminal of rectifier 11. A neon indicator lamp 8 connected across the normally open main contacts 4a of contactor 4, is illuminated only when these are open and the set is " safe." When electrode 6 touches workpiece 7 to commence welding, relay 9 becomes energized and closes its contacts 9a. Contactor 4 responds and closes the welding circuit at contacts 4a, thus enabling the full welding current (adjusted by reactance 5) to flow to the arc. Contacts 4b open just after closure of contacts 4a, but relay 9 remains held in by current supplied over contacts 4a and resistor 10. Specifications 769,433 and 803,534 are referred to.
