Abstract
1,032,306. Rectifying. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 26, 1964 [Aug. 29, 1963], No. 34911/64. Heading H2F. In a high-voltage D.C. supply (e.g. for X-ray apparatus) comprising a three-phase transformer 1 feeding a bridge rectifier 8, switch-on voltage surges in the rectified output are prevented by using a relay contactor 10 to connect all three phases of the transformer 1 to a threephase supply at the instant the voltage on one phase passes through zero and by including in one phase a damping resistor 21 which is shorted out after a delay (of e.g. 3 to 7 milliseconds for a 50 c/s. supply). A known circuit arrangement Sy detects the said voltage zero on one phase (T) and operates the contactor 10, and the resistor 21 is connected in the phase (R) whose voltage lags by 120 degrees with respect to the phase T. An auxiliary contact 24 on contactor 10 operates an auxiliary relay 23 which shorts out resistor 21 after a delay. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the auxiliary relay 23 may be omitted and the contact 24 itself then operates with a delay to short out the resistor 21. In a further modification (not shown) the relay contactor 10 may be replaced by gas-discharge tubes.
