Abstract

661,723. Pencil holders. SCHMIEGLITZ, W. June 8, 1949, No. 15312/49. Class 146 (iii). A pencil holder is provided with a plurality of spring-controlled lead-holders each comprising an actuating bar by means of which it is movable within a common casing from a retracted position into a projected position, and a starshaped latch member centrally mounted within the casing and adapted, upon movement of any one of the lead-holders to projected position, to be first tripped by one of two shoulders on the actuating bar of said holder for release of any previously projected holder, and then to engage the other one of the two shoulders of said actuating bar of said projected holder, thereby to retain same. Each lead-holder comprises a flat bar 6 slidable in a longitudinal slot 20 in a core 2 fitted tightly into a casing 1, the slots being axially curved, such that the lead-holders are brought into an axial position coinciding with the axis of the casing when projected. The lead holders are projected by actuation of knobs 19 slidable in slots in the sleeve 1 against the action of springs 11. A latch 13 having upturned projections with slanting edges 14, is rotatably mounted on the lower end of the core 2 and is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 9 by a U-shaped spring 16. Projection of a lead-holder causes a shoulder 15 on its bar 6 to engage and rotate the latch 13 and so release the previously projected holder which then returns to a retracted position. Further projection causes the latch 13 to engage an upwardly facing shoulder 30 on the bar 6 and so retain the holder in projected position. The core 2 is provided with a storage space for the spare leads 17. Individual leads may be projected by turning a tubular element 9 journalled in a member 8 hinged to one of the bars 6, the upper end of the member 8 being internally threaded to engage external threads on a push rod 10 held against rotation by a flat on the member 8.
