A point-protector for a reservoir pen, pencil or a small tool, such as a scriber, comprises a cap 4 divided into two parts 4a and 4b of substantially U-shaped cross section, the parts 4a and 4b being capable of separation by a wedging action, for example between a tapered portion 2 of a ball-point pen 1 and abutments 8a and 8b on jaws 9a and 9b. The parts 4a and 4b, having cut-out portions 5a and 5b, are biased towards one another, such that the end walls 4<SP>1</SP>a and 4<SP>1</SP>b overlap in the closed position, the bias being provided by a resilient mounting 6 within a casing 7. The pen 1 is axially slidable in the casing 7 against a spring 10, from a retracted position into writing position by means of a push button, the arrangement being such that the cap parts 4a and 4b are wedged apart in advance of the arrival of the writing ball 3 at the end walls 4'a and 4<SP>1</SP>b. The pen may be locked in projected position by a resilient projection engaging an aperture in the rear end of the casing, such projection being releasable by depression of a pocket clip carrying a lug. In a modification, the cap parts 4a and 4b are carried by a slidable sleeve directly on the pen 1 or on a suitable casing, the jaws 9a and 9b being replaced in these instances bv abutments on the interior of the cap parts. The rear end of the sleeve is made resilient and formed with an inturned end for engagement with spaced grooves in the casing, so as to lock the sleeve in a projected position in which the ball is enclosed by the cap, and a retracted position in which the pen is in writing position. Alternatively, the sleeve may be locked in either position by spring-pressed balls carried by the casing, such balls engaging spaced grooves in the sleeve. In a further modification, the cap and sleeve may be movable between their projected and retracted positions by means of a screw thread of coarse pitch, one part. of the thread being formed in the sleeve and the other on a further sleeve secured to and projecting beyond the casing.
