Abstract

661,650. Typewriters &c. ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc. Dec. 15, 1949 [Jan. 14, 1949], No. 32271/49. Class 100 (iv). [Also in Groups XIX and XXXIV] A rail structure for supporting the carriage of a typewriter or like machine comprises a rail proper and a wear-resisting strip C of springy material anchored at its ends 12 to said rail and lying in face-to-face contact therewith by means of an inherent spring characteristic of the strip C. The rail 1 is mounted on the machine framework A and contains a grooved insert 2 forming a track for ball bearings 3 spaced by toothed rings 6 meshing with rack teeth 7 on the rail 1 and with teeth on the carriage rail 4 also provided with a grooved insert 5. The strip C is pre-bowed as shown and is fitted on the underside of a rearwardly extending ledge 8 to form a guide co-operating with a series of clamps 9 on the carriage rail. The clamps are vertically adjustable by means of inclined slots and clamping screws 11.
