Abstract

1,129,461. Typewriters &c. OLIVETTI UNDERWOOD CORP. 1 Jan., 1966, No. 22/66. Heading B6F. [Also in Division B3] Hardened surfaces are produced on the relatively soft metallic guide rails 21 and 22 of a typewriter carriage supporting structure by moving the rails longitudinally relative to a tool rail 38, tool balls 40 located between the rails thereby deforming the surfaces of the grooves 28 in the guide rails. The guide rails are adjustably clamped in a fixed support 20 while the tool rail is traversed on a pneumatically operated bar 50. The balls, which are disposed in a longitudinal free moving cage, are arranged in pairs facing one another, the size of the balls increasing slightly after the first pair in order to produce progressive working of the rails. A similar arrangement is used for hardening the surfaces of two opposed grooves 28, Fig. 6, in a carriage rail 26, hard tool rails 38 being positioned on each side of the rail 26 in this case. The tool rails are adjustable in position using filler rods 76 and screws 75, and the rail 26 is traversed between the tool rails and worked by the tool balls.
