[Also in Group XV] In a labelling machine means are provided for positioning csntainers, e.g. bottles, in two movements so that a projection thereon, such as moulded lettering, is in a predetermined position relative to the conveyer in order that subsequent application of a label occurs at the desired point relative to the projection. Bottles 14 each having a projection 16 pass to the machine on a conveyer 12 being held by pads 20, Fig. 1, of an endless chain 18 engaging the top of the bottle. When the bottles reach the initial registering apparatus 10, Fig. 4, the pad 20 is raised from them by connections from a cam 30. Fig. 1, and simultaneously rollers 70 not shown and 72 are rocked to co-operate with a fixed roller 64 to hold the neck of the bottle. A driving unit 102, Fig. 4, comprising rollers 104, 106 driven from the cam shaft 32 through a clutch and an opposing unit 108, comprising an idler roller 110 and a detecting finger 111, are advanced on their respective slides 112, 118 in time relation to the movement of the conveyer by connections from a cam 122 on the shaft 32, to engage the bottle, which is thus rotated counterclockwise until the projection 16 contacts the finger 111. The finger 111 rocks the shaft 244 and through a cam bar engages a pawl and ratchet in the drive of the rollers 104, 106 to arrest the bottle a little beyond the predetermined position. The pads 20 then reengage the bottle which is moved to the final registering position 300 where it is similarly released from the pad 20 and engaged by idler rolls 318, 320 advanced on a, slide 322 by a cam 328, not shown, on the shaft 32. A finger 326, also operated from the cam 328 to effect the final movement to position the bottle, is pivotally mounted at 350 to an arm 352. The finger is rocked by a cam operated linkage from its neutral position 326<SP>1</SP> out of contact with the bottle to contact it in an extended position 326<SP>11</SP> from which it moves along the bottle surface to move the projection 16 clockwise to the predetermined position at right angles to the conveyer 12, at which point the throw of the cam 328 brings the linkage to rest. A stop finger 376, not shown, spring urged against the bottle may be provided to engage the side of the projection 16 opposite the finger 326 positively to stop movement of the bottle. U.S.A.
