661,445. Loaf slicers. RATTI, J. Sept. 2, 1949 [Sept. 3, 1948; Aug. 1, 1949], Nos. 22762/49 and 22763/49. Class 28 (ii). An automatic slicing machine for bread &c. comprises a cage 2 having sockets 2a in which are placed vertically loaves 15 which fall to rest on a table 10, the cage 2 being reciprocated horizontally towards and away from a hand-saw 11 situated above the table 10 at a height equalling the thickness of the slices. During cutting, each loaf 15 is held by a spring 24 against the rear wall of the socket, the spring force being temporarily relieved during the return wavecrest of the cage 2 due to the contact of a part 29 (attached through a bar 27 to the spring 24) with a fixed stop 30, thus allowing the loaf to fall and the freshly cut face to contact the table 10 for the next cutting. A flange 2c fixed to the cage 2 pushes each freshly cut slice slightly forward, and this, combined with a step 34 in the table 10, ensures that each slice is free of its loaf after cutting. Each slice pushes the preceding slice towards a conveyer which carries them to an oven.
