Abstract
661,168. Piezo-electric instruments. SONOTONE CORPORATION. Aug. 18, 1947 [Aug. 31, 1946], No. 22874/47. Class 40 (iv). [Also in Group XL (b)] An electro-mechanical transducer comprises at least one solid dielectric body composed essentially of titanate particles and two electrodes united to spaced electrode surfaces of the body to form a capacitor, the particles being initially random-oriented and subsequently permanently polarized so that in the absence of an external polarizing potential applied to the electrodes the capacitor operates as a piezo-electric body. As shown, flexing of the spring-like member 20 which is secured to one of the electrodes 15 produces tensional or compressional forces in the dielectric 16 of capacitor 12 which is polarized by battery 25. The resulting changes in the potential of electrode 14 are utilized as signal output. The effect is reversible and battery 25 may be disconnected once the particles have been polarized. The transducer may be incorporated in phonograph pick-ups, or light weight microphones for deaf-aids, or may be used as an amplifier.
