Abstract

661,167. Expanding-wheel gear. SAMCOE HOLDING CORPORATION. Aug. 12, 1947 [Oct 1, 1946], No. 22393/47. Class 80 (ii) [Also in Groups VIII and XIII] In a drying apparatus (see Group XIII) in which two tubular fabric strips are fed in spaced parallel relation in succession over drums 28, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35, the rate of feed is adjusted in response to the tension of the tautest strip by means of expanding wheel gears operated by dancer rolls 30. Drive is supplied by an endless flat belt 91 driven from drive 92 and the belt 91 passes over pulleys 93 on shafts 98, which pulleys are double pulleys consisting of a flat faced pulley in contact with the belt 91 and a V-belt pulley 93a driving a V-belt 99 which passes around one of the grooves of a variable pitch pulley 100 on shaft 101 on arm 118 pivoted at 119 and actuated by the action of the cloth on roller 30 through a cam mechanism. V-belt 102 passes around the second groove in pulley 100 and drives pulley 103 on shaft 104 supplying drive to the drum through gears 106, 107. Movement of the roller 30 and thus of pulley 100 causes change of centres between shafts 98, 101, 104, one belt being forced to adapt itself to a larger 'pitch diameter as the other belt is forced into its groove by the increase in distance between centres, the centre disc 123 being thus forced against the first belt to cause it to adopt a larger pitch diameter and change the speed of the drum. To compensate for belt wear the end disc 127 (Fig. 9) may be adjusted laterally on sleeve 125 but in a modified construction (Fig. 12) the spool disc member 123a slides longitudinally on the sleeve 125a and a spring 127c held by a collar 125b urges the sleeves 123a and 127a against their belts so that compensation for belt wear is automatic. In another modification (Fig. 13) the shaft 161 has a sleeve 162 rotatably mounted thereon by bearings 163, the sleeve having fixed at one end the disc 164 of the driven pulley the other disc 165 of which is carried by the spool 166 rotatably mounted on sleeve 162. At the other end of spool 166 is the disc 167 of the driving pulley the other disc 168 of which is mounted on the bushing 169 rotatably and slidably mounted on the sleeve 162. A ring 170 carried by the bushing 169 is recessed to take graphite bearing plugs 172 engaged by the cam surface 173 of the cam barrel 174 fixed to sleeve 162 and recesed to take spring 175 bearing against the bushing 169 to resiliently press the pulley discs together. The cam surfaces 173 provide partial helices engaging the plugs 172 and press the disc 168 to the left so that the pitch diameters of the belts are regulated by the amount of torque being transmitted, increased torque causing increased crowding of the discs and thus increase of pitch diameter. Specification 495,785, [Group XIII], is referred to.
