Abstract
661,034. Lactose. USINES DE MELLE, Dec. 7, 1948 [Dec. 20, 1947], No. 31669/48. Class 127. The precipitation of calcium compounds during the crystallisation of lactose from milk serum, containing calcium lactate after defecation with lime, is substantially prevented by the addition of an acid to produce lactic acid and a calcium salt having a solubility distinctly different from that of calcium lactate, or a salt to produce a lactate distinctly more soluble than calcium lactate and a calcium salt having a solubility such that the whole or substantially the whole thereof will precipitate, the acid or salt being added in an amount sufficient to react with at least so much of the calcium lactate as would otherwise precipitate during the crystallisation, e.g. with 75 per cent of the calcium lactate. The salt may be an alkaline metal sulphate, oxalate, tartrate or carbonate. The acid may be one, e.g. hydrochloric or nitric, which will produce a calcium salt having a solubility such that the whole or substantially the whole thereof will remain insoluble or one, e.g. sulphuric, oxalic or tartaric, which will produce a calcium salt having a solubility such that the whole or substantially the whole thereof will precipitate. The precipitated calcium salt in either case is removed prior to crystallisation.
