Abstract

660,760. Cables. FELTEN & GUILLEAUME CARLSWERK AKT.-GES., HORN, H., and DEPPE, J. Nov. 4, 1949, No. 28259/49. Class 36. A high - tension overhead line conductor comprises a strain - taking stranded steel wire core over which a current - conducting seamless extruded aluminium pipe is pressed. Fig. 1 shows a solid wire core 1 surrounded by an aluminium pipe 2, whilst in Fig. 2 the core is hollow and comprises self-supporting profile wires 3. The hollow wire core 4, Fig. 3, is kept in shape by an inner aluminium pipe 5, which, together with the outer pipe 2 serves to conduct the current. To reduce hysteresis and eddy-current losses, alternate wires 4 may be of non-ferromagnetic metal such as aluminium, or alternate steel wires 4 may be covered with polyamide or polyvinyl acetal (Fig. 4, not shown). In manufacture, the pipe 2 is pressed against the core so that its inner surface engages in the wedges formed between the wire strands.
