660,670. Differential gears. FASULO, L., Dec. 22, 1948. No. 33059/48. Class 80 (ii) The half-axles 19 of a vehicle differential gear are clutched to the driving housing 13, when it is desired to lock the gear, by moving toothed members 26, slidable on the polygonal-section axles, into engagement with internal teeth 24 on sleeves 23 splined by means of the teeth 24 on tubular projections 20 of the housing 13, and secured by set screws 25. The members 26 are moved by two-part forks 29 extending through slots in the axle casing 11 and secured to rack bars 36, Fig. 2, enclosed by a housing 34 and operated by a pinion 38 controlled through bevel gearing from a knob on the dashboard. Alternatively, the forks 29 may be secured to spring-loaded pistons slidable in cylinders 61, Fig. 8, which are mounted on the casing 11 and to which liquid is forced from a cylinder 66a by a piston 67 on depression of a spring-loaded foot pedal 70 adjacent the brake pedal 94. The pedal 70 is pivoted on the stem 69 of the piston 67 and has a ratchet extension 77 normally held in engagement with a fixed detent 78 by a spring 80, whereby the piston 67 may be held in depressed position until released by tilting the pedal 70.
