660,617. Chucks. MALKIN & CO., Ltd., F., ABBERLEY, M. W., and ELLIS, A. G. March 30, 1950 [March 31, 1949], No. 8720/49. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIII] A chuck for a potters' lathe comprises discs 23, 41, fixed on the chuck spindle 12 for locating a workpiece C, the disc 41 having a rubber band 44 which is expanded radially to grip the workpiece by means of slotted segmental weights 42, carried in slots in the disc 41, when the chuck is rotated at speed. The band 44 is secured to the disc 41 by means of adhesive and clamping members 45. The chuck spindle is provided with a vacuum duct 25 and port 26a communicating with a corresponding duct in the lathe spindle leading to a vacuum pump. The workpiece is located on the chuck at first by a light vacuum action, but when the band 44 is expanded to seal the inside of the workpiece, the vacuum action is increased. The vacuum control mechanism is the same as that described in Specification 660,616, [Group XXIII]. Specification 654,306, [Group X], also is referred to.
