Abstract

In a method of making an anisotropic permanent magnet of an aluminium-nickel-cobalt-iron alloy, the alloy is produced having a preponderating [100] crystal orientation, the magnetic field used for magnetic hardening is applied parallel to the [100] direction and the magnet is finally magnetized in the same direction. The required orientation may be obtained by abstracting heat in the required direction from the molten metal in a mould, e.g. by a water-cooled chill while the remainder is kept warm in a furnace. A sand mould may have a coated metal bottom and small electric heaters embedded in the sides. The alloy may consist of 10-40 per cent Co, 10-28 per cent Ni, 6-11 per cent Al, 0-7 per cent Cu and 0-7 per cent Ti, with or without less than 1 per cent each of W, Cr, Mo, V, Zr, Ca, Ce and Si, the balance being iron and unavoidable impurities.
