Abstract
Aluminium or aluminium-coated conductors are insulated with polymeric chlorotrifluoroethylene by passing the conductors through a dispersion of the polymeric material and then heating to volatilize the liquid phase of the dispersion and to fuse the polymeric material to a smooth sheath. The polymeric material is powdered in a hammer mill and then mixed with a dispersing liquid such as high-flash naphtha, butyl alcohol, benzene, toluene, xylene or ethylene glycol, and mixed in a pebble mill to obtain a homogeneous dispersion which may be maintained by agitation. For example, 15 parts of the polymeric powder may be mixed with 85 parts of a liquid dispersing medium comprising 2/3 by weight of high-flash naphtha and 1/3 n-butyl alcohol. The mixture is milled in a pebble mill for 168 hours. A conductor coated with this dispersion is passed through an oven whose temperature varies from about 150 DEG C. at the entrance to about 500 DEG C. at the exit. The dispersing medium is volatized at the lower temperature and the polychlorotrifluoroethylene coalesces at the higher temperature.
