Abstract

659,943. Mops. GREENLEAF, N. B. April 29, 1949, No. 11518. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1948. [Class 19] A self-wringing mop consists of a head secured to a handle, a sponge block releasably secured to the head on its underside and having a bottom working face presenting at the rear an edge displaced below said head, a presser plate having a pivotal connection at the rear of the head to swing about an axis fixed relative to the head and above the bottom working face and at right angles to the handle, and means to maintain the presser plate in a mopping position above and at an angle to the block, the relative positions of the pivotal connection and presser plate enabling the plate when swung from the mopping position to engage first the block at the rearward lower edge and then to compress the block in a direction forwardly and against the underside of the head. In the figures the head of the mop comprises a flat plate 1 to which is secured a screw socket 2 to receive the handle 3. At the rear edge portions of the plate 1 are turned up above the plane of the plate and are fixed into hinge panels. The mopping element 6 is formed of a highly absorbent sponge material, preferably of cellulose sponge, and is in the form of a quadrangular block having its upper surface 7 inclined rearwardly. Secured to the upper surface 7 is a plate 9 having rolled longitudinal edges 10 to receive the longitudinal edges of the mop head 1. The extending edges of the mopping element form a bumper around the edge of the mop. Secured to the upper forward longitudinal edge of the mopping element 6 is a longitudinal fabric strip 11, between the folds of which is a compressed fold of the sponge material 12. The fabric strip 11 and the plate 9 are adhered to the sponge material with suitable adhesive such as cellulose acetate. Secured to the rear of the mophead is a presser plate of arcuate or angular form which forms the wringing element. The presser plate is bent or curved near the longitudinal edge to provide a wide portion 20 for engaging the under surface of the mopping element when the presser plate is swung to the position of Fig. 3. Secured to the presser plate 15 is a handle 21 which is engaged by a spring clip 22 when swung to the inoperative position. Specifications 659,511 and 662,737 are referred to.
