EDGE SEALER FOR PILE FABRIC Filed Dec. 5, 1966 FIG5.
INVENTORI ATTY.
United States Patent ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present apparatus comprises a manually operable plough for controllably applying a liquid adhesive to the ase portion of abutting edges of pile fabric such as carpet- Description Referring now to the drawings FIGURE 1 is a perspective showing the present adhesive applicator in use to apply an adhesive to the lower edges or cushion of two abutting pieces of pile fabric.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged section as seen at 22 of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 3 is a section as seen at 33 of FIGURE 2,
FIGURE 4 is a top view of the structure of FIGURE 1, and
FIGURE 5 is a bottom view on a reduced scale of the applicator.
The present device comprises a base member or plate of generally triangular configuration and having lower edges 11, 11 formed around three sides thereof. The apex of one side of the triangle is truncated at 12 to form the forward edge of the apparatus as it is movedacross two abutting pieces of fabric. The underside of the plate 10 is provided with a plough or keel 13 which extends forwardly of edge 12 and is elevated to protrude visibly above the top of plate 10 in a nose 14. Approximately of the distance behind the forward edge 12 of the plate 10 is provided with an aperture 15 which is at the forward terminus of a slot 16 in the base and the keel 13 terminates just in front of aperture 15.
The top of the plate carries a forked bracket 18 having an annular collar 19 positioned concentrically with aperture 15 and serves the function of spotting an adhesive reservoir 20 which in the preferred form is a flexible polyethylene bottle having a threaded cap 21 and a nozzle 22 which extends downwardly through aperture 15 to a position slightly below the bottom edge of keel 13. The reservoir 20 is rigidly clamped on bracket 18 by means of a bifurcated plate 23 secured in position by a thumbscrew 24 (FIG. 2). The prongs of plate, 23 extend partially around cap 21 thereby securely holding the cap and the reservoir in position on collar 19. Bracket 18 is secured to plate 10 in any convenient manner such as the spot welds 25, 25 shown in FIGURE 4.
In operation two abutting sections of pile fabric 30 and 31 (FIGS. 1 and 3) are positioned on the floor in tight abutting relationship. In the operation to which the present invention is particularly adapted each section of carpet 30 and 31 is provided with a resilient rubber cushion or backing 32 and 33 respectively. The applicator is then guided between two adjacent rows of pile projections 34 and 35 as shown in FIGURE 2 with concurrent pressure by the operator on the reservoir 20 to extrude a bead 36 of adhesive along the top of the seam 37. The head 36 of adhesive may penetrate the seam 37 slightly but will ordinarily seal and join the two sections 30, 31 together by means of contact with the base of the pile rows 34 and 35. The length of nozzle 22 can be adjusted to position the adhesive head 36 in the most satisfatcory manner depending upon the thickness and height of the pile on the fabrics as typified by rows 34 and 35.
The applicator described herein is very effective in the seaming of rubber backed pile fabric. However, it may be used with other types of pile fabric which may or may not have an integrally secured pad or cushion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A liquid adhesive applicator for pile fabrics and the like comprising a flat base member, a keel on the bottom of said base member extending backwardly from a position in front of the base member, a liquid adhesive reservoir mounted on the top of the base member, a delivery nozzle from the reservoir extending through the base member in line with the keel and positioned at the rear terminus of the keel, an extension at the forward end of the keel said extension protruding upwardly to a point above the base member visible to the operator, and a handle for guiding the base member.
2. Apparatus in accordance with claim 1 having means for clamping the reservoir onto an annular collar on top of the base member.
3. An applicator in accordance with claim 1 in which the liquid reservoir is deformable to permit the operator to express adhesive from the nozzle.
4. An applicator in accordance with claim 1 in which the handle is of generally arcuate configuration in a vertical plane and partially surrounds the reservoir to permit the operator to simultaneously guide the applicator and compress the reservoir.
