Abstract

659,677. Lubricating. DUROSE, H. V. Aug. 17, 1949, Nos. 21362 and 28017. [Class 12 (iii)] A lubricator for a vehicle leaf - spring 14 comprises an oil container 1 adapted to be secured upon the leaves of the spring by a resilient member passing around the spring and holding felt or oil-absorbent material 9 against the edges of the spring leaves. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, the resilient member comprises two spiral springs, each in the form of an endless loop, and an intermediate connecting-plate 16 having integral open-ended sleeves 17 through which the springs pass. At one side, a spring is permanently attached to the oil chamber 1 by a sleeve 11, and at the other side, a spring engages a hook 12 on the chamber 1. The felt pad 9 is initially an inverted U-shape, and is secured to the container 1 by side flanges 7. A hole 10 is provided in the top surface of the pad 9, and on displacement of a ball valve 6 in the base of the container 1 by movement of the vehicle, oil from the container is fed into the space 10 and thence to the side felt layers 9. The oil chamber 1 is provided with a filter gauze 18, an air vent 19 loosely closed by a rivet 20, and filling apertures 21 closed by projections 22 on spring arms 23. In a modification shown in Figs. 5, 7, the resilient strap comprises a pair of coiled springs 25 connected together end-to-end by an intermediate metal link.26 which carries a rubber suction-cup 29 which bears against the bottom of the spring 14. Each felt side layer 9 is of tapering form and has fitted over it a channelsectioned rubber cover 30. Ribs 31 on the covers 30 are provided with shallow grooves 32 into which the springs 25 fit. One of the Provisional Specifications states that the ball valve 6 may be replaced by a dumb-bell valve, or a wick device, or the container may be connected to a dash-pot lubricating system.
