[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for pre-heating and conveying the fibrous material in a pressure system comprises a receiver 13, an inlet conduit 10 for introducing the material thereinto, a jacket member 15 surrounding said inlet conduit for supplying steam to said receiver, said jacket member having slots 18 communicating with the interior of said receiver, and screw conveyer means 20 for carrying the material to the discharge end of said receiver, said screw conveyer means comprising discontinuous vanes interrupted at periodic intervals along its length to retard passage of material through the apparatus, the floor 13a of said receiver being inclined downwardly from its inlet end for at least a portion of its length. Fig. 1.-Material is introduced at 10 into receiver 13 suspended by supports 28. Steam is introduced through a valve into annulus or jacket member 15, the annulus being inserted by bolts 14 between inlet 10 and receiver 13, and the steam issuing through slots 18 into the receiver. The material slides down incline 13a and is decomposed by the action of the compressed steam and is conveyed out to the outlet 26<1> by screw conveyer 20 which is formed with broken threads 21 and which works against floor guide elements 23, the conveyer being driven from sprocket 26.
