Abstract

[Also in Divisions F4 and H5] Microwave energy is propagated through a microwave-confining chamber 61 in order to dry separate pieces of material passed into and out of the chamber through spaced inlet and outlet openings 68, 69, the pieces being moved individually between the openings on a stationary surface 62. The surface 62 has jets 63 through which air from a blower 76 is passed in order to propel the pieces and sweep their surfaces with air, the arrangement of jets being such that a separation is maintained between the pieces of at least one diameter of the pieces. Dummy loads 82, 83, are provided in order to absorb excess energy when working at less than full load. Feed and discharge tables 70, 71, similar in operation to the internal surface 62, may be provided. The surface 62 may form the lower wall of the microwave-confining chamber, or may form a false bottom for the chamber, in which case it must be made from a microwave transparent material. The microwave-confining chamber may be made up of several seriallyconnected waveguides, and a monitoring device may measure the dryness of the material emerging from the chamber and feed a signal back to a unit which controls the generator output accordingly.
