[Class 44] [Also in Group X] In a snap fastener for attaching trim panels and the like to an automobile body, comprising a stud 10, Fig. 1, formed from a spring metal strip bent to U or diamond shape, and formed with a waist 15 and a pair of outwardly directed feet 16, 17, a U-shaped strip metal retainer is apertured in one of its flanges to encircle the waist 15 of the stud, the stud being substantially at right angles to the retainer. The stud is inserted in the aperture 25 which is provided in one flange 21 of the retainer, by pinching the feet 16, 17, together and passing the waist 15 through an entering slot 26. An edge of the trim panel is then inserted between the flanges 18, 21, of the retainer and maintained therein by prongs 19, 20, on the flange 18. The upper flange 21 is bent inwardly at 22 and outwardly at 23 to leave a channel 24 the feet 16, 17, thereby being enabled to move when inserting the stud 10 in an aperture in a vehicle panel. Prongs may be provided on both flanges and the latter may have strengthening ribs 27, 28. In a modification, Fig. 3, in which one foot 38 is longer than the other 37, the feet are inserted in an aperture 42 in one flange 40 of the retainer. This flange is wider and longer than the other flange 41 and is internally ridged at 43 to allow the upper surface of the flange to stand away from the trim panel and leave room for the feet 37. 38, to move.
