Abstract

659,029. Oil well drilling apparatus. STEVENS, A. H. (Moore Corporation, L. C.). Aug. 23, 1949, No. 21870. [Class 78 (iv)] The apparatus is an improvement of the apparatus described in Specification 598,048, in which a mast 4 is mounted on a steel substructure 1 resting on the ground and straddling a well. To transport the mast a sling 16 is looped round the hook of the travelling block, the sling extending under sheaves 18 to the top of the gin pole 19. The line 6 is tightened and the front legs are disconnected from the shoes 15 and the mast is disconnected from the gin pole. The mast is supported by the shoes 11 and sling 16 while the mast is swung down to the ground. The gin pole 19 has legs 22, 24 hinged together at the top. The legs 22 are hinged to shoes 11 on the substructure 1 and the legs 24 are pivotally mounted between plates 31 disposed between vertical brackets 33 on the substructure. The triangular plates 31 are pivotally connected by pins 34 to the brackets so they can be swung up and down, the gin pole being then vertical or inclined to the vertical. The plates are secured in position by a pin 39 passing through corresponding holes in the plates and brackets. In raising the mast from the prone to the upright position, the mast is swung beyond the balance point and is allowed to rest against the gin pole to which it is then secured by eyebolts 28 engaging brackets 23. Jacks engaging the plates 31 are then operated to swing the plates upward, the locking pins 39 being removed to cause the gin pole to assume the vertical position and to bring the mast into operating position. The holes in the rear corner of the plates register with the holes 38 in the brackets and the locking pins are inserted. The lower front legs 12 of the mast are swung forward and connected to the shoes 15 to support the front of the mast.
