Abstract

658,419. Moulding reinforced concrete beams. GEAIRNS, A. J. E. May 14, 1948, No. 13226. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A reinforced concrete beam having a pair of flanges joined by a central web, e.g. a T-section beam, is moulded in a cavity formed by a pair of suitably shaped side walls 1 and a base 2, at least one of the side walls being detachably secured to the base and the side walls being held together by detachable bolts 9 which may pass through the end walls of the mould. As shown, the walls 2 are secured to the base 1 by bolts 6 engaging threaded collars 7 in the walls, Fig. 1, or by arms 18, Fig. 3, pivoted to the walls 1 and securable to brackets 19 on the base 17, which in this case is a metal tray, by wedges passing through aligned holes in the arms and brackets. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), clips hinged to the side walls engage under the base. Angle irons 3 and 5 may be fixed along top and bottom edges of the side walls and the outer surface of the lower flange of the beam may be formed by a troughshaped plate 4 engaging under shoulders 5a on the angle irons 5. Reinforcement 12, 13 is located in the mould by pins 16 passing through the mould walls at intervals and vertical plates 14 with slots 15 which space the reinforcement from the side walls. After fixing the reinforcement, a " dry " concrete mix is fed into the mould and partially consolidated by vibration. The supports 14, 16 are then withdrawn and consolidation completed by further vibration, more concrete being added, if necessary, to fill the holes left by the plates 14.
