Abstract
1338504 Pontoons WALCON Ltd 8 May 1972 [21 July 1971] 33582/71 Heading B7A A flotation unit such as a pontoon comprises a core 1 of closed cellular material, such as expanded polystyrene, and surrounded by an outer shell made of a water-hardenable mass 2, such as concrete incorporating fibrillated polypropylene fibres. The unit may be made by depositing a quantity of the said concrete mass on a mould floor, centralizing the core in the mould and depositing a further quantity of the mass upon the top and sides of the core and removing the mould after setting. The mould is subjected to vibration during the setting to permit adequate compaction of the mass. For depositing around the sides the mass is poured over a pyramidal element positioned on the top of the core. Bolts are vibrated into the concrete and serve for the mounting of clamping plates 5 for holding U-section steel bars which are interconnected at intervals by beams 9 and bridged by spaced planks 10. Joists 11 carried upon the beams support the planks 10. To avoid the use of steel, decking of fibre reinforced concrete may be employed.
