Abstract
658,168. Variable-speed gearing. OHRSTROM, V. T. July 5,1949, No. 17749. [Class 80(ii)] In a two-speed chain drive for bicycles, a disc 1 secured to the free-wheel runner carries on its hub 2 a smaller one piece sprocket wheel 3 and a larger sprocket wheel comprising toothed sectors 4 pivotally mounted at their inner ends 5 in recesses, in which they are retained by a bevelled ring 6. The chain, provided with a spring-loaded tensioning wheel, normally engages the wheel 3, the bent-over sector 4 lying in an annular recess in the disc 1. The sectors have pieces 8 which project through slots in the disc and are engaged by retaining springs 10. The sectors are caused to swing out successively into the plane of the wheel 3, to take over the drive, by outward movement of a bar 12 formed with a half ring 13 embracing. the hub 2 beneath the pieces 8, the bar being operated by Bowden mechanism. The bar 12 also carries a cam 14 which, on inward movement of the bar, returns the sector 4 successively to their inoperative position. A second set of larger sectors may be provided to give a third speed.
