Abstract
658,033. Sliding clasp fasteners. NAGELE, K. F. April 30, 1949, No. 11585. [Class 44] A machine for applying the upper and lower stop members to sliding clasp fastener tapes comprises two magazines 4 supplying the different members from sorting drums 2, 3 to reciprocating plunger presses 5 each plunger being adapted to move a stop member forward against an abutment 5a and to hold it there with a light pressure while the tape is inserted, a clutch then being engaged to cause the plunger to continue its forward movement to secure the member on the tape. A shaft 7a driven, e.g. by an electric motor through a pulley 12, has freely mounted thereon eccentrics 7 to operate the spring loaded plungers. Each eccentric may be connected to the shaft when desired by a clutch consisting of a helical spring 8 closely fitting the shaft, and having one end engaged in a bore in the eccentric and the other end in contact with an arm 9 displaceable by a press-button 10. The spring stiffness and size is such that when the arm is held by the arm 9, the plunger has moved forward, carrying the final member in the magazine against the abutment 5a and holding it with a light pressure. After insertion of the tape, the button 10 is pressed, the spring 8 binding on the shaft to rotate the eccentric projecting the plunger to clamp the member in position. After this movement the plunger returns, receives another member and moves it against the abutment, the end of the spring then contacting the arm 9 again to release the clutch. Any other suitable clutch may be used. To prevent the members sticking in the magazines they are vibrated by hammers. In the form shown the hammers 18 are actuated by air pressure transmitted by a pipe 16 from a cam operated piston 14. Alternatively an electromagnet supplied with alternating current may be used. The drums 2, 3 are rotated by a belt from a pulley 11..
