657,758. Rope grips. CHIPCHASE, R. S. March 1, 1948, No. 6442. [Class 78 (ii)] A device for restraining and controlling the speed of ropes under load comprises two jaws with longitudinal grooves which register with each other to form a guideway for the rope and with means for adjusting the distance between the jaws whereby the grip of the jaws on the rope in the guideway may be varied and guiding elements disposed at either side of the jaws and arranged to guide the rope so that it enters and leaves the guideway along the axis thereof. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the grip comprises two jaws 1 and 2 having longitudinal grooves, preferably of V shape, for the rope 3. The jaws intermesh having slots 6 and 7 which allow adjustment for gripping ropes of small section. The jaws are mounted on a base 8 provided with lateral pairs of lugs to which a bridge-piece 9 is secured so that it can pivot about one pair and be firmly secured to the other. A screw 14 passes through the bridgepiece and bears on the top jaw 1 which can be pressed to grip the rope by operating a screw means 15. The base 8 is slidably mounted on an under support 16 and is urged by a spring 19 towards the rear wall 17, the base tends to move toward the wall 18 on tightening the grip on the rope. The two walls have removable guide notches 20, 21 for the rope and the springs are coiled on guide rods 22.
