Abstract
A preparation for use in horticulture or agriculture for assisting the germination of seeds, the rooting and growth of cuttings and the growth of seedlings and plants, and for improving the fertility of the soil, is produced by passing a composite solution containing a salt of alginic acid or other lyophilic colloid, e.g., agar, gelatine, fish glue or carrageen moss, inorganic plant food substances and plant hormones or growth regulating substances through a bed, which may be composed of alternate layers of peat and fresh animal faeces, and which has been inoculated with soil bacteria, and collecting the fluid drained from the bed, which may be repeatedly passed through until it begins to ferment. The resultant fluid may be precipitated in a bath of a soluble calcium salt, strained, pressed and dried, and ground to powder form. A compost may be made by absorbing the fluid with cellulosic material, e.g., straw or peat A fertilizer may be made by absorbing the fluid in bentonite, fuller's earth or kieselguhr, drying and grinding to powder.
