657,586. Forging helical grooves; making twist drills, reamers, &c. BOOTH, C. H., and HARDWICK, H. B. April 8, 1949, No. 9619 [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A method of producing twist drills, helically fluted reamers &c. consists in rotating a substantially cylindrical blank and advancing it axially between opposed dies which strike simultaneously, the blank passing first between flute-forming dies 19 which allow a free flow of metal and then between land-forming dies 23 which have portions 30 to engage the flute or flutes to prevent deformation while the lands are formed. The dies are mounted by rubber sleeves 12 in a cylinder 11 and are reciprocated by rollers 31 in a rotating flywheel 33, the frequency of vibration of the sleeves 12 being substantially equal to the frequency of reciprocation. The pairs of dies may be reciprocated in or out of phase. The dies are shaped to produce the necessary rotation of the blank, although a feed mechanism or a stationary guide may be provided. The blank is heated and the operations are performed in an inert atmosphere.
