Abstract
657,455. Machinery safety devices. METAL BOX CO. Ltd., PORTER, E. M. J., and CLARKE, C. S. Feb. 18, 1949, No. 4545. [Class 80(iv)] The starting handle 1 of a machine is locked in the " safe " position, against a stop 3, by a spring- loaded latch arm 11 of a bell-crank lever which is linked to the pivoted armature 7 of an electromagnet 4, the latch arm 11 cooperating with a pin 12 carried by the starting handle. The electromagnet 4 is energized upon the closing of one or more safety switch devices (which may be operated by guards, not shown), and, upon energization, the armature 7 moves the latch arm 11 and allows the handle 1 to be raised to start the machine. A second armature 15 carried by the pin 12 serves to retain the handle in its raised position, the electromagnet 4 being sufficiently powerful to hold both armatures 7 and 15 and prevent movement by normal means of the handle. When a safety switch is opened, or upon manual operation of a push button in the same circuit, the electromagnet 4 is de-energized and the handle 1 returned to the " safe " position under gravitational or spring action. Rapid de-energization of the electromagnet may be assisted by the provision of a small continuously - energized reverse winding, which may be connected in series with a resistor.
