Be it known that l, Gnonoa C. Wannen, a citizen of the United States, and a resi# donner the city of New York, borough of Brooklynin the county of Kings' and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Switch, of which the -following is a `full, clear, and lenact description.
rlhis invention relates to the general class lo of electric switchesand has particular reterence to an improvement in a double trip switch.
The invention contemplates for one of its principal objects,A 'the provision out a double le switch provided with means which renders the same capable of either mechanical or electrical actuation.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a double 'trip switch which is extreriiely simple in its construction and method ot' operation, inexpensive to manufacture, highly ecient, and strong and durable in construction.
With Ithe above recited and other objects a5 in view, some of which will appear hereaftenreterence is had to the following specication, the appended claims, and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal'sectional view through a box or container for the switch.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken approximately on the line 2 2 ot Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is .a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 ot Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of one use to which the switch may/be adapted.
Referring to the drawings by-characters of reference, 10 designates a housing for the switch which may be of any su1table construction other than that shown. The
'housing is provided with a removable cover 11 which constitutes the base upon which the switch elements are mounted. The switch includes two pair of contact members comprising respectively the Vresilient embracing jaws 12, 12 and 13, 13 respectively carrie by the bases 14, 14 and 15, 15. A vertically movable circuit closing member 16 carrying the blades 1 7, 17 is mounted on the stem 18. The stem 18 is slidably mounted. for vertical movement in the 1J-shaped bracket 19 and the upper end of said stem extends through an opening in the cover of the housing and is provided with a manipuof the latch.

The embracing jaws of the contact elements are disposed with their mouths in superposed relation whereby when the manipulating button' 20 is operated to move the stem against the action of the spring 23, the blades 17 will be disengaged from the upper embracing jaws 1'2 and engage with the lower embracing jaws 13. ln order to provide means for retaining the blades in engagement with the lower jaws 13, 'for bridging the same, against the action of the spring 23, use is made of a pivoted latchv 25 which is mounted as at 26 to the tree extremity of the lower arm 24 of the bracket. A convolute spring 2? normally effects the swincing 'of the latch to a position to engage and lock the member 16 in circuit closing relation with the-lower j aws '13. The nose of the latch 25 is beveled asat 28, and the lower side of the circuit closing member 16 is beveled as at 29 whereby said beveled surfaces will coact upon downward movement of the circuit closing member. to automatically effect the locking The switch is provided with a 90 mechanical means for releasing the latch, and said mechanical releasing means comprises a lever 30 carried by the pivot 26. Une extremity of the lever constitutes a nger 31 which engages the latch and the opposite extremity 32 is connected to a shifting rod 33 which extends upwardly through the cover 11 and is provided with a button 34. ,A coiled contractile spring 35 surrounds the shitting rod and is positioned between the button and the cover. By this arrangement it will be seen that upon depressing the button 34, against the action of the spring, the lever will be swung to a position to effect the disengagement of the latch with the circuit closing member.
The electrical means for releasing the latch comprises an electromagnet 36 carried by a leg 37 depending from the upper arm 38 of the bracket. The said electromagnet 36 is designed when energized to attract the latch which assumes the rle of an armature.
The switch is capable of many uses, but for the purpose of demonstrating one ot its uses, the diagram illustrated in Fig. 4 has been used. This diagram represents a burglar alarm system which includes a primary actuating circuit and a secondary alarm circuit 41. In this use of the switch, the primary actuating circuit includes the electromagnet 3G, the battery 42 and a circuit closing button. 43 which is normally held out of contact with the points 44 by the engagement therewith of the window sash 45. The primary circuit also includes the Contact jaws 13, 13 which are bridged by the blades 17 when the alarm system is set. To initially set the alarm system the stem 18 is depressed to effect the bridging engagement of the blades 17 with the contact members 13, the armature or latch 25 engaging the circuit closing member .16 to retain the same in set position against the action of the spring 23. The secondary or alarm circuit k41 includes the bell 46, the contact members 12 and the battery 42. In this useof the invention, when the window sash is raised and the circuit closing button 43 is released 'the same will` bridge the contact points 44 to close the primary or actuating circuit 40. When the circuit 40 is closed, the electromagnet 36 will be energized and will attract the armature 25 to effect its disengagement to release the circuit closing member 16. The spring 23 will shift the stem 18 and the blades 17 into bridging engagement with lthe contact members 12, thereby closing the ,secondary or alarm circuit 41 to cause a continuous or constant ringing of the bell 4G, untilthe button 2O is again depressed to break the'secondary circuit. The device may also be usedv in call systems where the electrical release of the retaining means may be used to good advantage as a signal t0 acknowledge the receipt of a call by the receiver of the same.
lVhile there has been illustrated and described a single and preferred embodiment of the invention, ano limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details, nor the particular use set forth, as it is understood that variations and modifications in the structure and use which Ifall Within the scope of the appended vclaims may be resorted to when found expedient.
I claim:
1. A switch comprising two pairs of contact elements, a common circuit closing member manually shiftable to engage and bridge one pair or' contacts, automatic means for effecting normal bridging engagement with the other pair, a pivoted latch adapted to automatically engage and to coact with said member for retaining the same in engagement with said latter pair of contacts, independent means for eiiecting the release of said latch mechanically or electrically comprising' a lever pivoted adjacent said latch and manually operable to release the same, and an electromagnet adjacent said latch adapted when energized to attract the same for moving it to releasing position.
2. A switch comprising two pairs of contact elements, common circuit closing inembers manually shiftable to engage and bridge one pair oi" elements, a pivoted latch to enga-ge with the member for retaining it in engagement with said pair of contacts, electromagnetic vmeans for releasing the latch, means for moving the circuit closing member to normal position in contact with the other pair of contact elements, and a pivoted, manually operated lever normally disposed adjacent the latch member, said lever being independent of the electromagnetic means and adapted when operated to attract the latch member, said lever providing separate means whereby the latch may be released independently of the action o the electromagnetic means.
