Abstract

657,380. Control systems for electromagnets; exciting dynamo-electric machines. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Feb. 18, 1949, No. 4458. Convention date, March 13, 1948. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] In a control system to operate lifting electro. magnets, each magnet 1 is supplied from a D.C- generator 2 having three field windings, viz., a shunt winding a, a series winding c in opposition to the shunt winding and a separately fed winding b helping the shunt winding, the magnetization and the demagnetization of the magnet 1 being attained by the switching " on " or " off " of the current in the winding b. The magnitude of the current fed to the magnet is maintained constant irrespective of the thermal condition of its winding by arranging the shunt winding a so that the resistance line coincides with the straight part of the magnetization curve of the generator. When a push-button 5 is actuated a resistance 6 is put in series with the winding b, the current in the magnet drops down with the result that scrap loosely attracted by the magnet will be dropped and when the switch 4 is open, so that no current flows in the winding b, the P.D. of the generator rapidly decreases because the M.M.F. of the winding c preponderates over that of the shunt winding a and will even cause a reversal of polarity causing immediate dropping of the remaining attracted scrap. With the switch 4 closed and the resistance 6 shorted by the push-button 5 the combined M.M.F.'s of winding a and b preponderate over that of c and a steady predetermined value of current flows to energize the magnet 1:
