657,104. Cotton pucking machine. WEEMS, A. W. March 5, 1948, No. 6900. Convention date, March 15, 1947. [Class 6(iii)] A cotton picking machine comprises a bank of continuously rotatable cotton engaging spindles 60 mounted in rows and arranged to be reciprocated into and out of cotton plants from a position at one side of the row, and a bank of strippers 103, each stripper being bored to receive a spindle and rotatable therewith. As shown the spindles 60 are mounted on a carriage 20 reciprocated by a pitman 53 connected to a crankpin 49 on a disc 48 driven by gearing from a power unit on the machine. A sprocket 75 driven by the power unit has a shaft 78 slidably splined thereon, which shaft drives the spindles 60 through gearing. The spindles 60 are of cruciform section and one rib so formed has serrations for seizing the cotton from the bolls. Each stripper 103 comprises a cylindrical member having a bore conforming to the shape of each spindle, the strippers being rotatable in a separator 110 mounted on the carriage 20. Cam-operated shutters 140 are arranged to close when the spindles 60 are retracted in the strippers 103 to enable the gathered cotton to be removed by blower and suction means through conduit 152, 153, the space between the strippers 103 and shutters 140 forming an enclosed space, plates 142, 143 closing the top and bottom spaces. A plate 160 having holes 161 to receive the ends of the spindles enables gathered cotton to be pushed back in the spindles and become firmly wrapped thereon. Spaced guides 170 and wire guides 173 are used to gather the limbs of the plants between the plate 160 and shutters 140. The front wheel supports 182 of the machine are provided with hydraulic cylinders for adjusting the height of the machine frame from the ground. In a modification for picking two rows of plants at a time, the spindles 60 are extended rearwardly and coupled to a further set of spindles which are provided with a set of strippers mounted on an extension of the carriage 20.
