Abstract

656,490. Supply systems depending on two or more sources. PESTARINI, G. M. Sept. 2, 1948, No. 23174. Convention date, March 17, 1941. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] The varying voltage requirements of a constant current transmission system, such as the traction supply system described in Specification 656,670, [Group XXX], are provided by a metadyne generator or transformer operating in series with another current source which is either one or substantially constant voltage or one unable to meet quick voltage variations which may be required. The second source may be a rotary D.C. machine with or without field control, or a three-phase rectifier with or without grid control. Fig. 2 shows a rectifier 3, 4 connected in series with metadynes 5, 7 to supply a track 1, 2. A resistor 6 having an earthed centre tap is connected as shown to minimize the maximum voltage between the track and earth. To reduce the circuit voltage under open circuit conditions the current/voltage characteristic of the metadyne may sharply droop when the machine output voltage reaches a predetermined value. Fig. 7 shows a twotrack supply system allowing short connections between the current sources and the track and wherein one half of the track loop is supplied by the rectifier 3, 4 and metadyne 5 in series, whilst the other half of the loop is supplied by the rectifier and metadyne 7 in series. Specifications 399,351, 417,517 and 430,009 also are referred to.
