Abstract
656,390. Aircraft wings. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Sept. 7, 1948, No. 23583. [Class 4] An aircraft comprises an air-consuming power plant for propulsion, a hollow wing structure open along substantially the whole of its leading edge, and air passages extending from said leading edge to the air inlet of the said power plant. Preferably the maximum thickness of the wing is at its leading edge. In Fig. 1 a fuselage 10 with fins 11, nose 12, and a gas turbine jet-propulsion unit 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, has wings 20 in which the ducts 19 formed between the upper and lower surface members of the wings act as air intake for the gas turbine unit. As will be seen from Fig. 2, the lower and upper surface members of each wing includes an outer skin 21 and an inner skin 22, the inner skins being arched between the webs 23 which define the side walls of the ducts 19. These latter make an angle with the longitudinal axis of the aircraft approximately equal to the Mach angle a, the leading edges of the wings being swept forward so as to deflect air smoothly into the ducts 19. Suction slots 26 are provided at the junction of the leading edges with the fuselage, the air abstracted from this area being ejected rearwards to assist propulsion. The space within the fuselage above and below the air ducts may be occupied by fuel. Two jet engines may be provided side-by-side in the fuselage, the port engine being supplied with air from the port wing, and the starboard engine from the starboard wing. For the exhaust a common nozzle is provided.
