Abstract

656,240. Reinforced concrete beams. GLOVER, C. W. Sept. 29, 1947, No. 26306. [Class 20(iv)] A pre-stressed pre-cast reinforced concrete beam is made by casting a reinforced concrete beam 1, 7, 8, with high tensile reinforcement 4 anchored therein and with a gap 9, 10 near each end thereof, widening the gaps until the requisite tension is induced in the wires, and filling the gaps with concrete while the tension in the reinforcement is maintained. The gaps are conveniently widened by means of nuts. and bolts 11, 12 bearing on steel plates 13, 14 inserted in the gaps, the nuts being partly screwed off to widen the gap sufficiently for the insertion of longer stronger bolts, and so on until permanent steel spacers can be inserted. The wires are conveniently grouped in one or more straight strands held together with coarse string and surrounded by a sleeve 15 of bituminous or waxed paper or the like which prevents the concrete from bonding with the wire. The sleeve is helically wound with coarse string. The wires are preferably cut. in equal lengths, twice that of the beam looped through the plates 13, 14 at one end, passing over a short tube 16, and clamped or welded together after passing through a companion plate at the other end. Specification 541,160 is referred to.
