Abstract
656,121. Pneumatic tyres. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. Dec. 31, 1948, No. 33607. Convention date, July 30. [Classes 144 (i) and 144 (ii)] An air tube of the kind comprising a main rubber tube enclosing a fabric-reinforced tube of smaller cross-section, and normally spaced from the tread and side-wall zones of the main tube, is produced by preforming a reinforced tube 5, Fig. 1, on the part 1 of a mandrel, sliding the tube on to a flat-rubber band 4 on the stepped portion 3 of the mandrel, folding the band around the tube 5 and securing its edges, with or without a superposed rubber band 7, to the rim-seating portion of the tube 5. The built-up tube is vulcanized in a twopart mould 15, Fig. 4, pressure-fluid being admitted through openings 21, 18 in the valvestem 17 to the tubes 19, 20 respectively. After vulcanization, and whilst the tube is still heated, the reinforced tube 19 is re-inflated with the outer tube 20 open to atmosphere, whereby the tube 19 is given a permanent set in cross-section during cooling.
