1307816 Making pneumatic tyres DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 4 March 1970 [6 March 1969] 11847/69 Heading B7C A method of manufacturing a pneumatic tyre having a rubberized parallel cord breaker, and traction bars and/or blocks in the tread, comprises fabricating the breaker to the diameter it will have when in the completed tyre and stabilizing it against radial distortion by pretensioning through radial expansion and/or at least partial curing, locating the breaker coaxially around a prefabricated uncured tyre casing on a tyre former, expanding the casing to engage and support the breaker, applying an uncured tread portion and moulding and curing tie cover so formed. In a first embodiment the breaker, comprises layers of rubberized cords at 22 degrees to the mid-circumferential plane of the completed tyre intended for an earth moving vehicle, is built on a collapsible breaker form having a diameter the same as the breaker has when in the completed tyre, removed to a curing diaphragm for stabilizing by semi-curing, rasped and treated with naphtha, and fitted into a transfer ring for locating around the uncured casing. In a first modification the breaker is built on a former with a diameter between 94% and 99¢% (preferably 98%) of the diameter of the breaker when in a completed tyre, and then transferred to an inflatable curing diaphragm where it is stabilized by expansion and semi-curing. In a second modification the breaker is built as in the first modification and is so tensioned but not semi-cured, instead it is transferred uncured to around the uncured casing by means of a transfer ring. The stabilizing of the breaker reduces its distortion caused by the flow of the uncured tread during moulding.
