Abstract

655,986. Heating liquids in bulk. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd., and LAMB, J. March 30, 1948, No. 8974. [Class 64(iii)] The heating grid of a storage tank for mineral oil products &c. is made mainly of finned cast-iron piping which (1), is arranged in straight lengths, (2), is of sufficient strength to be rigid between supports spaced at distances of 20 times the sum of the diameter of the piping and the height of its highest fin, and (3), has twice the heating effect per unit length, and either the same length or half the length, as smooth steel piping of 2 inch bore, 2# inch external diameter, and 1 square foot of external heating surface per 80 cubic feet of tank space. In the form shown, straight lengths of finned cast-iron piping 6 have a bore of at least 2#2 inches, and an external cross-sectional contour of at least 15 inches. They are supported by slings 13 from beams 12 resting on longitudinal strengthening members 4 of the tank, and are connected by unfinned bends 8 which are also of cast-iron. Two, three or four fins may be .provided. They may be straight or spiral.
