Abstract
655,370. Centrifugal pumps; hydraulic turbines. ABBEY, A. (Soc. Financiere d'Expansion Commerciale et Industrielle Soc. Anon. Sfindex.). Dec. 31, 1947, No. 34938. [Classes 110(i) and 110(iii)] [Also in Groups XI and XXIX] Fluid flows between two surfaces of revolution within which is situated a helical surface having at least one thread with a pitch ranging from more than 0 to less than 90 degrees, at least annular surfaces of one of the surfaces of revolution being axially displaceable with respect to the other surface of revolution in order to adjust the area of through-flow whilst maintaining the angles of flow constant. Fig. 5 shows an annular nozzle or diffuser having a single- or multi-threaded helical surface 3 confined between walls 1 and 2<SP>11</SP>. Members 2 and 5 are axially displaceable to regulate the flow area and the swirl respectively. The pitch of the surface 3 is constant over the range of adjustment of member 2. The member 5 may be omitted, and in the case of a nozzle in which the flow is directed outwardly with respect to the axis instead of inwardly as shown, the member 2 and wall 2<SP>11</SP> form the outside surface of revolution. Fig. 6 shows a centrifugal pump comprising a rotor having radial blades 11 and carrying cylindrical guide surfaces 9 and 9<SP>1</SP> which cooperate with stationary helical surfaces forming an inlet 6 and a diffuser 17. Regulation is effected by axial displacement of the rotor. The machine may be used as a hydraulic turbine. The helical surface 6 may be dispensed with if the rotor blades 11 are made of helical form, as shown in Fig. 8.
