Abstract

655,125. Smallarms. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. Aug. 18, 1948, No. 16378. [Class 119] To prevent vibration of the barrel during firing, the barrel 10 is supported by a longitudinal metallic beam 14 integral with or rigidly attached to the action casing 11, Fig. 3, or fastened to the rear of the barrel, Fig. 9, the barrel being spaced from the beam but attached to it forwardly by screw or like means for stressing the barrel transversely. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the rear end of a channelshaped beam 14 is welded to the action casing 1 and the front end carries a support 18 for the barrel fitted with screws 19, Fig. 4, which with a screw 17 on the beam serve to stress the barrel transversely. An adjustable fore-end grip 13 is fitted to the beam. Fig. 9 shows the beam 14 attached at the rear to the barrel by screw 35 and packing piece 37 and at the front to the barrel by screw 42 and sleeve 40. In a modification, (Fig. 11, not shown) the beam may be in the form of a sleeve surrounding the barrel. According to the Provisional Specification, resilient blocks may be arranged between the barrel and beam at the points where the stress is applied to the barrel.
