Abstract

654,936. Hot gas engines. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Nov. 29, 1946, No. 35459. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1945. [Class 7(i)] [Also in Group XIII] An engine which can either be employed as a hot gas engine or as a refrigerating engine (see ' Group XIII), and in which the volume of the cold space is varied by means of one piston while the volume of the hot space is varied by means of a second piston co-axial with and further from the engine shaft than the first piston, the second piston being coupled to the engine shaft by a coupling member which passes through the first piston, comprises a regenerator within the engine and heat exchangers extending within the engine and arranged between the two pistons. As shown the working medium is wholly enclosed between pistons 5, 6 in the engine cylinder the piston 5 being for example 90 degrees in advance of the piston 6. Within the cylinder are heat exchangers 22, 23 comprising radial fins which project both inside and outside the cylinder. A regenerator 24 is positioned between the heat exchangers. To prevent transfer of heat between the heat exchangers a heat insulating layer 27 separates them and a part 2b of the engine housing between the heat exchangers is of material of poor heat conductivity. In the case of a hot gas engine the heat exchanger 22 is heated and the heat exchanger 23 is cooled the crank shaft 14 to which the pistons are connected delivering power. The space 29 above the piston 5 is enclosed and compression of gas takes place in this chamber.
