Abstract

689,592. Hot-gas engines. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 4, 1950 [Aug. 9, 1949]; No. 19530/50. Class 7 (i). The wall of the cylinder head is part spherical and extends past the section of greatest diameter which section lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of the cylinder bore, and partly surrounds the hot space, and is secured to one or more parts of the engine which is or are at a lower temperature during operation of the engine. As shown the cylinder head is heated by combustion gases which enter at 7 and are exhausted at 8. Within the wall 4 an annular space is provided which includes passages 5, for the combustion gases, which alternate with channels 6 for the working medium. The channels form part of one or more heat exchangers. The channels 6 have apertures 6<SP>1</SP> through which the working medium passes via a regenerator 9 and a cooler 10 to the space between the displacer 2 and a piston 3. The clearance space is reduced by a number of part annular filling pieces 11 arranged around and inside the lower part of the wall 4. In a modification, ribs are provided on the outside of the wall 4 instead of the passages 5. Ribs may be provided in the channels 6: The part spherical wall may comprise projections or tubes for increasing the heat transfer. Tubes may span a part of the internal or external working surface and have their ends passed into and secured to apertures formed in the curved surface. The projections may be in the form of fins secured or formed on the internal or external curved surface. The wall may be provided with tubes containing a heat transmitting medium for indirect heating of the Working medium.
