Abstract

696,525. Refrigerating. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 7,1951 [June 10, 1950], No. 13534/51. Class 29 [Also in Group XXVII] A combined hot gas engine and refrigerator working on the reversed hot gas engine cycle comprises two displacers 12, 13 the upper surfaces of which vary the volumes of a hot space 14 and cold space 24 respectively while the lower surfaces vary the volume of a medium temperature space 18, 19, 20 in open connection with the hot space through a cooler 17, regenerator 16 and heater 15 and with the cold space through a cooler 21, regenerator 22 and freezer 23. The construction is such that the value of the expression # Tk/Tv lies between 0.5 and 2.5 where v is the ratio of the maximum volumes of the cold and hot spaces and Tk, Tv the absolute temperatures of the medium temperature and cold spaces. A small electric motor 29 supplies the energy required to reciprocate the displacers. The gas in the medium temperature space 18, 19, 20 is compressed and flows through the cooler 21, regenerator 22 and freezer 23 into the cold space 24 in which it expands, extracting heat from the freezer 23 and the space 25 to be cooled. The gas then flows back through the freezer 23, regenerator 22 and cooler 21 to the medium temperature space and the cycle is repeated. The hot gas engine part comprises the same medium-temperature space, the cooler 17, regenerator 17 and pipes 15 heated by a burner 26 which provides the necessary energy, the combustion gases leaving at 27. The cylinders may be arranged at 90 degrees to each other.
