Abstract

654,359. Dry shavers. O'HANLON, P. H. April 1, 1947, Nos. 8891, 16104 and 16677. [Class 131] In a dry shaver, of the kind comprising a slotted, stationary guard plate having a part cylindrical surface and one or more co-operating cutters continuously rotated about the axis of curvature of the guard, the length of the guard plate in the direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the cutter is small compared with the diameter of the cylindrical surface swept by the cutting edge of the cutter and the slots in the guard plate and the cutting edge of the cutter are parallel to the axis of rotation and at right angles to the general direction of the handle. As shown, the shaving head 5 comprising a cup-shaped guard member having a plane sidewall 6 and a peripheral guard plate 7, slotted at 8 in its thinner region, is received in the top end of the casing which houses an electric or a clockwork motor. A detachable cover 10 is a press-fit in an annular flange 9 and is apertured at 45 for the evacuation of cut hair. The spring- urged, U-shaped cutters 14 have cutting edges skewed to the slots 8 and are freely mounted on a spindle 12 secured to the drive shaft 11 on which is also mounted a fly wheel 19 which may be outside the casing. Several modifications of the cutters are described. A further modification is shown in Fig. 9 in which the cutters 33 having edges 16 oppositely skewed to the slots 8 are set in a hub portion 32 the shaving head consisting of two semi-cylindrical parts 7a, 7b secured together and to the casing 1 by means of integral lugs 31. Impeller means to blow the hairs through these apertures may be provided. Provisional Specification 654,359 describes a dryshaver of the type shown in Fig. 9 and having an octagonal blade-carrying member which may be arrested by a thumb-operated brake. A rearwardly projecting spring steel blade is mounted on each flat face and a rectangular block steel cutter, the outer wall being ground to the inside curvature of the part 7a, is secured to the free end of the spring blade.
