Abstract

654,318. Haymaking. BAMFORD. C. J., and BAMFORD, H. V. Oct. 1. 1948, No. 25562. [Class 6(iii)] Relates to swathturners or windrowers comprising a wheelsupported frame holding a shaft driving a plurality of turning heads, the frame being attached during working behind a tractor with the frame arranged transversely to the direction of travel. According to the invention, a swathturner with tine-bearing turning heads is provided with an additional supporting wheel spaced from the normal supporting wheels transversely to the length of the frame and means for attachment to the tractor at one end of the frame so that the machine can be transported with the frame parallel to the direction of motion of the tractor. The frame comprises a tube 10 having lugs 11 for attachment to the tractor. In bearings 12 are rotatably mounted shafts 13 carrying castor wheels 14 which may be screw-adjusted to vary the height of the frame above the ground. Rearwardlyextending brackets 15 carry bearings 16 supporting a shaft 17. This shaft carries three turning heads 18 constructed as in Specification 527,981, [Group XXIV], and adjustable along the shaft, which is driven through bevel gearing from the power take-off shaft of the tractor. An additional wheel 19 is mounted on a rearwardlyextending arm 21 detachably fitting an aperture 22, Fig. 2, in a bracket 23 and engaging in a slot 27 in a second bracket 24 on the frame, collars 25, 26 locating the arm in the brackets. In a modified construction the arm 21 is pivotally mounted on the frame and held in a raised position when the wheel 19 is not in use. At one end of the frame 10 is secured a two-part drawbar 38 for attachment to the tractor when the machine is to be transported. For transport the arm 21 carrying the wheel 19 is attached to the frame or with the second construction (not shown), the arm 21 is lowered to bring the wheel into contact with the ground and the drawbars 38 are attached to the tractor.
