Abstract

654,131. Vehicle suspension. BLACK, W. Oct. 6, 1948, No. 26094. [Class 108(ii)] A road vehicle suspension comprises a semi-elliptic laminated spring articulated at its ends to an axle-supporting member and also to auxiliary shock absorbers which are mounted on the vehicle body or frame, the axle supporting member being resiliently supported by main shock absorbers mounted on the body or frame. All the shock absorbers are preferably carried by an inverted channel member. Fig. 1, shows an axle-carrying member 12 whose ends are articulated by shackles 28 to the ends of laminated spring 21. Spring 21 abuts the transverse web of the inverted channel member 10, with or without the provision of buffer springs, or it may be bolted thereto. The ends of the laminated spring are also connected by shackles 22 to piston rods 18 of hydraulic auxiliary shock absorbers 16 fixed to the channel member 10. The ends of axle-carrying member 12 have upstanding pillars 13 which have pads 15 at their upper ends engaging helical springs 14 enclosed in housings 11 fast with the channel member 10. In a modification, Fig. 4, each end of the spring 21 is articulated to a sliding plate 27, and is slotted for sliding movement over a reduced portion 25 of the piston rod 18 of the auxiliary shock absorbers 16; the figure shows also an axle 30 carried in brackets 20 by the axle-carrying member 12. In a further modification of the auxiliary shock absorber mounting, Fig. 5, each end of the spring 21 has a shackle pin 31 slidably mounted in a block 38 disposed between a pair of helical springs 39 located between the axlecarrying member 12 and the channel shaped member 10.
