Abstract

The vulcanization of rubber is retarded by adding a salt of an organic sulphonic acid with a metal other than an alkali metal. The sulphonic acid may be an alkyl, aralkyl, aryl (including alkaryl), or cycloaliphatic acid. Specified compounds are zinc dodecyl benzene sulphonate and the corresponding copper, magnesium, calcium, and barium salts; and the zinc salts of benzene sulphonic, benzene disulphonic, cyclohexyl sulphonic, m-xylene sulphonic, p-cymene sulphonic, naphthalene 2-sulphonic, isobutyl hydroxy diphenyl sulphonic, 1-naphthol 4-sulphonic, 2-naphthol 4-sulphonic, and phenol sulphonic acids. About 2 parts of the retarder per 100 parts of the rubber are used preferably in the form of an intimate mix with an accelerator such as diphenyl guanidine. In examples certain of the above mentioned retarders were added to a mixture containing natural rubber, carbon black or precipitated whiting, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur, optionally with a softener and an accelerator chosen from mercaptobenzthiazole, benzthiazyl disulphide, diphenyl guanidine, zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate, tetramethylthiuram disulphide and butyraldehydeaniline.
