Abstract

Moulding compositions are formed by incorporating a resin and a filler into a molten mixture of cyclized rubber and a low-melting resin compatible therewith. The low-melting resin should melt at 70-150 DEG C., preferably 70-120 DEG C. and may be a coumarone-indene resin, a coumarone resin derived from heavy benzene fractions, rosin, ester gums, phenolformaldehyde resins soluble in blown linseed oil, e.g. xylenol-formaldehyde resins, or phenolformaldehyde resins modified with rosins or rosin esters, and the mixture of cyclized rubber and resin should melt at 80-120 DEG C. In the case of fully-cyclized rubber the amount of resin is from 1 to 3 times the rubber. A resin or other substance incompatible with the cyclized rubber, and a plasticizer are incorporated into the molten mixture. The incompatible substance may be hard bitumen, stearin pitch, natural or synthetic resins, e.g. fusible xylenol-formaldehyde or naphthaleneformaldehyde resins, coumarone-styrene resin, rosin, and plasticizers such as dibutylphthalate, orthodinitrodiphenyl, or a high-boiling aromatic petroleum extract. Fillers may be a fibrous material such as asbestos, a non-fibrous material such as limestone or whiting, and a pigment such as finely-divided iron oxide.
